THIS IS THE BOOK TO HAVE!
VIRTUALLY EVERY ORGANIZATION FACES A CRISIS AT SOME POINT ... OFTEN WITH NO ADVANCE NOTICE
Reputation is the element of leadership that earns support and makes it possible to survive a crisis and, better yet, thrive in the aftermath. Each crisis has its own drama and serious implications inside and outside of an organization. Each demands a considered response.
With a focus on reputation and crisis communication, this book provides crucial guidance ... before, during and after a crisis hits.
In this mix, technology and the ever-present digital media in all their forms have now completely upended the world of communication. It is a bottoms-up world where news and information are shared and broadcast in nanoseconds by anyone who has a digital device and a point of view. It matters not whether they are informed. And everyone has an equally loud voice.
News is no longer the exclusive purvey of the traditional media. That ground has now been lost and crisis communication planning has been forced to adapt by being even better prepared, at-the-ready all the time and faster off the mark.
This book recounts media reports of recent crises to illustrate the importance of reputation, document some of the coverage by both traditional and social media and briefly share select reports that set the scene for the impact of the crisis. In each example, I have adopted the newspaper and magazine technique of a “Sidebar” and have relied on the language and actual words reported at that time in media news, opinion pieces and company announcements in order to provide a snapshot of what was going on. I have separated each report into three brief parts: The Crisis Hits, The Crisis Boils and, in my view, What’s at Stake. Readers are left to make their own judgments.
The purpose of this book is to provide actionable insights. It outlines steps to earn trust well before a crisis hits and then to manage a crisis after the internet has sounded the alarm and the media are clamoring for answers to probing questions, calling for a statement on the record or on camera.
My focus is on learning from both what is replicable and what may be a unique. I believe that drawing on the crisis communication literature – including scholarly analysis – provides an essential perspective. Practical experience and having learned from others are at the heart of this book.
I have included personal interviews with experienced executives. And I am privileged to have had the Foreword written by Gene McCarthy, Chairman of the Board, FootBalance System, and the Afterword written by Pat Ford, Professional-in-Residence at the University of Florida, College of Journalism and Communications.
Harold Burson and John Hill – thought leaders and early founders of world class public relations firms that carried their names – always agreed on a fundamental principal of business: public support determines long-term business success. I am privileged to have worked at both those firms when the founders still went to the office every day so I know firsthand the insights they shared and the values and principles they treasured.
This book results from a learning journey through my almost 50-year career as a public relations executive working with public and private firms, multinational companies and non-profit organizations.
