This title is on contemporary South African architecture, celebrates some 50 projects of architectural excellence that have been built in the years of democracy since 1994. Through both text and full-colour photographs it explores the ways in which local architects have contributed to change in this country through their work and to the development of a new sense of cultural identity. The focus is on buildings that create beauty from utility and need, that respect their place in the landscape, that connect people to their social and physical environment, and that unlock the potential of cities to amaze and astound. This title will bring South African architecture to the centre of the international architectural debate.

About the book >.>.> This is the first book on contemporary South African architecture, bringing 50 projects realised over the past decade by 43 South African practices to local and international attention. Country monographs are not easy to compile, and are open to criticism for their lack of representivity. This country monograph does not set out to be representative, and makes no claim to geographical or historical completeness. It is both the residue and an extension of the first exhibition of contemporary South African architecture, held from October to December 2005 at the 6th International Biennale of Architecture and Design in S?o Paulo, Brazil. It is not intended as a catalogue of that exhibition. The content has been deepened and extended by the inclusion of two specially commissioned critical essays by some of the best commentators on South African architecture and culture. Architecture thrives in societies where the work of architects is open to scrutiny and debate, where it is understood that what architects do matters p. Codice articolo Batch-FM574-VG-12199
