9781783171828: Radicalisation and Terrorism: A Teacher's Handbook for Addressing Extremism

Sinossi

The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act (February 2015) makes it compulsory for schools to implement anti-radicalisation measures to help prevent young people from being drawn into terrorism. As the increasingly frequent press stories of school children being radicalised show, teachers urgently need a resource that enables them to recognise, debate and disrupt extremist narratives within the context of the classroom. This practical handbook provides a reliable and objective resource to enable lower secondary school teachers to tackle the complex subjects of terrorism and radicalisation with confidence. It sets political violence within a broad context of perceived injustice, using familiar emotions of anger and disappointment to introduce the notion of grievance, a precursor of all forms of terrorism. The text covers issues of citizenship, human rights and respect, civil and political engagement, the nature of identity and how we identify with others. It examines different forms of violence from bullying to the most recent examples of 21st century terrorism. Historical precedent is used to illustrate a variety of contexts in which political violence has occurred, from Assassins through Suffragettes to militancy in South Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania. The handbook considers the causes and consequences of terrorism and helps teachers to explain to children what terrorists do and why they do it; how to differentiate between the reasons, goals and methods of terrorists; why the media and terrorism are inextricably linked; what makes terrorism start and, crucially, what factors bring a cycle of terrorism to an end. Pupils are invited to reflect on the destructiveness of terrorism for both victims and aggressors and, taking Northern Ireland and South Africa as examples, to consider the process of reconciliation. The handbook tackles the problem of defining 'terrorism', a term which is value-laden and subjective, and which has eluded international consensus. Pupils are encouraged to explore the reasons for this, and to debate fact and bias through an examination of the role of the media in reporting terrorism. The role of social media within the process of radicalisation is also studied. Fictional storylines and classroom activities are provided to stimulate creative thinking and interactive participation.

Recensione

There is nothing like this available today. No school addressing these issues should be without it. --Conor Gearty, Director of Institute of Public Affairs and Professor of Human Rights Law, London School of Economics

Scot writes textbook on resisting Isis

Alison Jamieson says that children struggle to understand why their peers are joining extremists and are therefore unable to spot warning signs. A Scottish expert on terrorism has written a hand book for teachers to help protect pupils from radicalisation online in the face of growing Islamic extremism.

Alison Jamieson, who has worked for the UN fighting organised crime and drug trafficking, has turned to the problem of extremism in her book Radicalisation and Terrorism: A Teacher's Handbook for Addressing Extremism.

The guide, to be used in schools throughout the UK, aims to help pupils protect themselves against radicalisation both online and within their families and among friends.

She said that young people were particularly vulnerable to extremism in the 21st century but were not taught adequately in schools or by their families about the dangers.

More than 700 Britons have gone to Syria, according to the police; 43 women and girls have left in the past year alone. In November 2013 Aqsa Mahmood, 20, a privately-educated woman from Glasgow, disappeared from her home to travel to Syria and become a jihadi bride. Last summer Abdul Rakib Amin, 25, from Aberdeen, appeared in an Islamic State (Isis) propaganda video shot in Syria. It transpired in March that one of three schoolgirls from east London who had left in February for Syria had been in touch with Mahmood on Twitter. In July, Amin featured in another Isis film encouraging young women to come to Syria. Jamieson, who has also written about the mafia, said that her book aimed to start debate among children aged between 11 and 14 about what radicalisation was and how it happened, to allow them to spot the signs early on.

'Children know the word 'terrorism' but they have no reference for understanding it or why it's different from other crimes,' she said. 'If a child asks their teacher or parents why extremists do the things they do, they can t explain properly. Some of their peers are going off to Syria because of social media but they don t really understand why that is. If they go online to look it up, they are in danger of having their laptop seized and being sent on an antiradicalisation programme.' She added that the changing environment of the 21st century meant young people had a 'broader range of influences', making them more vulnerable to radicalisation.

'Often it is teenagers who have a troubled identity at a critical age in their life and are susceptible to stories of adventure and glory, she said. For girls there is this idea of a new utopian state, in contrast to the uncertainty and prejudice they could face at home.'

--Georgie Keate, Reporter, The Times

At a time when schoolteachers and other professionals are expected to do their part in preventing and reporting radicalization in their communities, there are virtually no resources to help understand and teach the complexity of terrorism in a way that is objective, balanced and accessible. We are fortunate then that Alison Jamieson and Jane Flint have produced a masterful handbook to help meet this pressing challenge. Radicalization and Terrorism: A Teacher s Handbook for Addressing Extremism is a unique, invaluable resource that belongs in every school. --Professor John Horgan, Georgia State University, and author of The Psychology of Terrorism
