GEORGE BEHE’s interest in the Titanic began when, as a small boy in the 1950s, he found a copy of an old 1912 Titanic book on his grandmother’s bookshelf. He used to thumb through that volume with fascination, but one of the book’s illustrations horrified him – an artist’s rendition of a lifeboat full of passengers that was rowing right past a dying swimmer who was holding his arm out in a hopeless appeal for help. He couldn’t help but wonder how it would have felt to be in that situation.
After getting out of the service in 1972, George finally had enough leisure time to indulge his interest by searching for Titanic survivor interviews in microfilmed 1912 newspapers and other untapped sources of information. Eventually he was fortunate enough to become friends with fifteen survivors, and finally he began utilising his research discoveries to write articles and books about the disaster. George is a past vice president of the Titanic Historical Society, and he fully expects his interest in the disaster to continue for the rest of his life.
