Alan Moore enjoyed a highly successful career in the financial services industry. In 1980 he founded what was rapidly to become one of the largest firms of independent investment advisors in the country. In 1987, backed by the recently retired chairman of ICI (Sir John Harvey-Jones), he became the Chief Executive of Burns-Anderson PLC. Retiring at the age of 40 since then he has been an active private investor, studied theology at Oxford, written a regular column for the Guardian and currently acts as a consultant within the gaming industry.
James Moore is currently reading Computer Science at Downing College, Cambridge. He is the co-author of the highly acclaimed book Professional PHP Programming.
Investors the world over are worried and they have the right to be worried. Stock markets are falling everywhere, interest rates are at all-time lows and millions of ordinary people who have money in building societies, unit trusts, endowments and pensions are feeling the pinch like never before.
The time is right for The Streetwise Investor; the true story of the ups and downs and thrills and spills of a rare breed, a successful British stock market speculator, Alan Moore, who started in the 1980s. Alongside son James Moore, the authors have spent their investing lives moving opportunistically from one ‘sure thing’ to the next. This includes making a fortune in privatization issues, exploiting the dot.com boom and quickly moving into Contracts for Difference, the new derivative that allows private investors to make the same moves as the institutional players. So, what on earth is their secret and how can ordinary investors learn and profit from their success?
The Streetwise Investor demystifies investment, explains the jargon and shows how to become an expert at assessing risk. By following the authors’ volatile portfolio as prices yo-yo and learning from the case studies of their major investments (such as Eidos, Carphone Warehouse and Telewest), any investor can learn how to apply their phenomenally successful investment approach. The Streetwise Investor gives you the confidence in your own ability to make sensible, profitable decisions in even the most explosive market conditions.
