The seventh Thomas Chaloner adventure in Restoration London
Thomas Chaloner is relieved to be summoned back to London. His master, the Earl of Clarendon, has sent him to Tangier to investigate a case of corruption. Chaloner will be glad to be home and reunited with his new wife, but the trivial reason for his recall exasperates him—the theft of material from the construction site of Clarendon's embarrassingly sumptuous new house just north of Piccadilly. Within hours of his return, Chaloner considers these thefts even more paltry as he is thrust into extra investigations involving threats of assassination, a stolen corpse, and a scheme to frame the Queen for treason. Yet there are connections from them all which thread through the unfinished Clarendon House.

Susanna Gregory is a Cambridge academic and the author of the Thomas Chaloner series.
We learned something terrible this morning, Chaloner,' whispered the Earl. 'The most dreadful plot ...'
'How may I help?' asked Chaloner, thinking that a 'most dreadful plot' sounded a lot more interesting than watching piles of bricks.
'There is a plan afoot to murder my architect,' breathed the Earl.
'Why would anyone harm him? Is it because people think Clarendon House too grand, and murdering its designer might make you reconsider-'
'No!' snapped the Earl angrily. 'I believe the real plot is an attempt to inconvenience me. My house is nearing completion, and they want to delay me moving in. For spite. Or jealousy.'
'How did you hear about it?' asked Chaloner. 'Was there a rumour?'
'We found a letter,' explained the Earl. 'In the Queen's correspondence.'
Chaloner was bemused. 'How did it get there?'
'Because she is the one who has commissioned the murder.'
Praise for Susanna Gregory:

'The author blends meticulous historical data into a well-paced, hard to put down story...A first-rate treat for mystery lovers' Historical Novels Review
