Race, Racism and Development is the first book to place constructions of race and racism at the center of a comprehensive analysis of the dominant discourses and practices of development. The author compares and contrasts two key theoretical approaches to race the postcolonial approach and a political economy approach - to provide the reader with provocative theoretical analyses, illuminated by topical case studies. Organized thematically, the insightful work includes a strong historical component, with parallels between the contemporary world and the colonial period. The book tackles human rights, imperialism, culture, ethnic conflict, HIV/Aids and the role of diasporas, and highlights the latent racialization in such debates to argue that development can only be understood within a full understanding of the relationship between north and south.

Kalpana Wilson is currently a research fellow at the Gender Institute, London School of Economics. Her extensive experience of teaching development studies in several UK universities, as well as her involvement as an activist around issues of racism led her to pursue the themes of this book. In doing so, she also draws upon earlier research on agrarian transformation in Bihar in India, women's participation in rural labor movements and gender, neoliberalism and agency.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Race, Racism and Development places racism and constructions of race at the centre of an exploration of the dominant discourses, structures and practices of development. Combining insights from postcolonial and race critical theory with a political economy framework, it puts forward provocative theoretical analyses of the relationships between development, race, capital, embodiment and resistance in historical and contemporary contexts. Exposing how race is central to development policies and practices relating to human rights, security, good governance, HIV/AIDS, population control, NGOs, visual representations and the role of diasporas in development, the book raises compelling questions about contemporary imperialism and the possibilities for transnational political solidarity. The book tackles human rights, imperialism, culture, ethnic conflict, HIV/Aids and the role of diasporas, and highlights the latent racialisation in such debates to argue that development can only be understood within a full understanding of the relationship between north and south.
