James Ron Leigh, now an Emeritus Professor, attended Sheffield City Grammar school and, after a period in Industry, studied Electrical Engineering at Sheffield College of Technology, winning the Freshgate Scholarship. He has a Master s degree in Mathematics (London) and a Doctorate in Control Engineering(Cambridge). His appointments have included: Senior Systems Engineer, United Steel Companies; Head, Control Systems Development Group, British Steel Corporate Engineering Labs.(London) and Post-Above-Reader, University of Westminster, responsible for initiating university-wide interdisciplinary research projects. He was Director/Founder of the Westminster-based Industrial Control Centre and of the Advanced Control Club, jointly funded by Government and Industry. He has supervised many successful projects aimed at transferring technology from Academia to Industry. One of his projects received the accolade: Best application of Technology and Knowledge, TCS Awards 2001 He has served the IET in several capacities, including setting up and chairing its Working Party on Control Applied to Biotechnology.
