This copy is bright, tight, white and square. The price clipped dust wrapper has a closed tear to the bottom right hand corner but is still in fine condition. Wing Commander Roland Beamont was an ace fighter pilot in the RAF's 2nd Tactical AF in the final year of WW2. Beamont commanded the first operational wing of the Napier-Sabre engined Hawker Tempest V, perhaps the fastest and most capable piston-engined fighter of its era, which initially operated out of Newchurch in SE England with three squadrons prior to the Normandy invasion in June 1944, and later when expanded to five squadrons was based at Volkel, an ex-Luftwaffe base in Holland. At Volkel, Beamont's wing continued operations over the Rhine while the airfield was under direct fire from long-range enemy artillery and suffered air attack from Me262s armed with cluster-bombs. Beamont is a good, matter-of-fact chronicler of the development of the ground-attack fighter-bomber concept on the allied side and of aerial combat during 1944. His narrative includes operations against ground targets such as trains full of German troops and armoured vehicles, the campaign against V1 flying bombs (Beamont's wing accounted for 638 of the 1,744 V1s destroyed by fighters through the summer of 1944), attacks on V2 launch sites in Holland and aerial combat against the Fw190, Me109G and the jet-powered Me262, of which the fast-diving Tempests shot down 15 and damaged another 18 by May 1945. Beamont spent the final months of the war as a PoW after being shot down over enemy territory, and returned to England in June 1945. The final chapter covers the author's post-ceasefire role at the Central Fighter Establishment at Tangmere, West Sussex, assessing the relative performance of various allied and captured German fighter aircraft.
