Condensation takes place in many fields where heat transfer processes involving phase change occur. These include refrigeration plants, sugar-refinery evaporators and air conditioning systems. Enhancement of condensation is important when thermal resistance on the condensation side is commensurate to or greater than the thermal resistance of the heat transfer wall and on the cooling side. In processes with condensation of steam-to-gas compositions the heat transfer can be several times less than that of the cooling liquid. An intensification of the condensation is therefore required. Professors V.G. Rifert and H.F. Smirnov have carried out research on heat transfer enhancement by condensation and boiling for over 30 years and have published more than 200 papers on the topic. In this book they provide research results from the former USSR to which there has previously been little access and also describe different theoretical models of the condensation process. Information about experimental research investigations carried out between 1947 and 2002 is also included.
