He was awarded two Pushkin Medals 'for distinguished writing about Pushkin in the English Language'. His many books include Alexander Pushkin: a Critical Study (1991); Eugene Onegin, Landmarks of World Literature (1992), and as editor Alexander Pushkin (1997) and translator Eugene Onegin (1995).
