Sinossi

England under the Stuarts presents a review of England from the accession of James I to the death of Queen Anne, as illustrated by contemporary material exhibited in the Ashmolean Museum. While the Stuarts occupied the throne, wide-ranging developments took place. The story runs from James I's arrival from Scotland and Charles I's disastrous interference with Parliament to the proclamation of the Commonwealth; from Cromwell's vision of a new social order to the Restoration of Charles II; and from James II's attempt to re-establish Catholicism to the succession of his daughter Mary (along with her husband William of Orange) and Anne. At home the first steps were taken towards industrialization and commercial reform, while on the world stage the foundations of Britain's empire in the east were laid and colonies established in the Americas.
