Desktop publishing (DTP) is one of the major growth areas in computing - the technology enables users at every level of expertise to use typefaces previously only available on dedicated typsetting systems. But most users come to desktop publishing with little or no training in typography, and even experienced graphic designers have to learn new rules about what is possible and effective. Alison Black's book examines procedures for choosing typefaces in a way which both groups of DTP users will find practical and illuminating. Starting with a description of the character set, and using hundreds of examples, the book looks at legibility at both character and word level, and discusses typeface choice in terms of an entire document and genre. Other sections deal with the technology of typeface reproduction and the limitations and opportunities this provides, do-it-yourself character production and professional font-production systems.
