Understanding the psychodynamics of groups has derived from the two separate strands of theory and practice, resulting in two separate disciplines: group psychotherapy and group dynamics. Present-day group psychotherapy derives mainly from psychoanalytic theory and Bion's early experiences with wartime groups, and has been developed from the work of clinicians who practice group psychotherapy as a form of treatment. Group dynamics theory and practice, on the other hand, have arisen largely from the work of social scientists like Kurt Lewin, have been researched in the field and in the laboratory, and have been applied to groups as arenas for leadership training and behavioral change. The Visible and Invisible Group synthesizes these psychoanalytic and group approaches to group life and offers practical guidelines to the group psychotherapist. The authors advocate the simultaneous use of two perspectives: the psychoanalytic perspective for observing the "visible" group of people and their interactions, and a General Systems "Field Theory" perspective for observing the "invisible" group-as-a-whole.

It examines the visible group, consisting of the actual people present and their observable interactions and behaviours, alongside the invisible group, which includes the underlying dynamics, roles, unconscious processes and system forces that shape what happens in the group. The authors argue for holding both perspectives at the same time. This dual view allows practitioners to move beyond surface events to grasp the deeper patterns that influence group life. The theoretical section develops the concept of the invisible group and applies ideas from group dynamics to both the visible and invisible levels. It explores how groups develop through recognisable phases and identifies three distinct levels at which group processes operate. The practice section addresses the real challenges faced by group psychotherapists. It covers preparing individuals for group membership, working with transference and counter-transference, managing co-therapy relationships and responding to specific difficulties that commonly arise. The work remains a valuable resource for group psychotherapists, counsellors and anyone facilitating groups in clinical, organisational or educational settings. Its emphasis on understanding groups as living systems continues to inform contemporary practice, particularly when working with complex dynamics, diverse membership or teams where both overt behaviour and hidden forces play important roles.
