9781856230094: The Woodland Way: A Permaculture Approach to Sustainable Woodland Management

Sinossi

Ben Law is an experienced and innovative woodsman with a deep commitment to practical sustainability. Here he presents a radical alternative to conventional woodland management that creates biodiverse, healthy environments, yields a great variety of value-added products, provides a secure livelihood for woodland workers and farmers, and benefits the local community. The author views the separation of agriculture from silviculture as unnecessarily limiting and argues for a new approach to planning that will encourage the creation of sustainably managed woodlands for the benefit of people, the local environment, and the global climate. Although specific to Britain, the principles of The Woodland Way will be understood by foresters worldwide.

This brilliant book covers every aspect of woodland stewardship from both a practical and philosophical standpoint. Ben Law writes from the heart after long years of struggle with a whole host of naysayers who tried to convince him by fair means and foul to give up his vision for a renaissance in the countryside.

Recensione

Ben's brilliant book points the way forward for woodland management in the British Isles and beyond. It covers every aspect of what is in reality woodland stewardship, from both a practical and philosophical standpoint. This book is set to be a classic and will surely mark a turning point in our relationship with woods and the natural environment. --Jean-Paul Jeanrenaud, WWF International

The Woodland Way contains a vast body of insight and practical advice, all of it deeply rooted within a permaculture philosophy. The real power of this book, as of all great permaculture texts, is twofold. Firstly, you reach the last page and feel equipped to have a go at it yourself, and secondly you realise how different the world would be if more people were doing this stuff. Ben is a man who has a deep reverence for Nature and for trees and this shines through his writing. For anyone who still thinks that making a living from the woods means flogging the occasional greenwood chair and a few hazelnuts, Ben shows that well designed woodland enterprises can be serious business and that the surface has only just been scratched in terms of potential. The book's concluding chapter, 'The Future', sets out such a clear and common sense vision for the future that it deserves to be published in its own right as a small booklet. Ben and everyone involved in producing this precious addition to the permaculture library deserve our thanks for offering another steady step towards diversity, abundance and a world fit for our children to inherit. --Rob Hopkins, Permaculture Magazine

Combines the idealism and philosophy of sustainable woodland living, with detailed practical and legal advice on how to do it. --British Trust for Conservation Volunteers

L'autore

Ben Law is arguably Britain's greatest living woodsman. He has inspired millions with his numerous TV appearances, training courses and lectures, and was most notably voted by viewers as having the Best Ever Build on Channel 4's Grand Designs programme with his Woodland House. He has also been on the BBC programmes Countryfile and The Green Team. In America, Ben s profile is on the rise due to appearances on The World s Greenest Homes, The World's Most Extreme Homes (HGTV) and Nightline (ABC) Ben has always had a passion for healthy, biodiverse farms and woodlands. He has worked on a smallholding, growing fruit and vegetables and looking after livestock. Having gained an Advanced National Certificate in Agriculture, he became a shepherd and set up a conservation landscaping business, specialising in ponds and wild flower meadows. Woodlands were a natural progression and after seeking out a few experienced coppice workers, he began work in the woods and in associated coppice crafts. Ben visited the Amazon in the late 1980s looking for positive solutions to deforestation and on his return set up and directed the charity, The Forest Management Foundation, working primarily with community forestry in Papua New Guinea. Ben was a founding member of the Forest Stewardship Council. He has also worked for Oxfam as a permaculture consultant. Ben has lived and worked at Prickly Nut Wood for 20 years, trains apprentices and runs woodland-based courses. Ben is most well-known, however, for his 10 year struggle to obtain planning permission to build a house in his own woods, made mainly out of materials from the woodland itself. Ben is the author of three bestselling books: The Woodland Way, The Woodland House and The Woodland Year. His latest book is Roundwood Timber Framing - Building Naturally Using Local Resources (August 2010). He is also the presenter of the DVD Roundwood Timber Framing, a film that records in detail one of his recent builds from beginning to end as well visiting previous projects, and is a companion to this book.
