Fifteen contributions from international scholars and NGO associates address the problems of speculative capital markets which were made evident by the Asian crisis of 1997 and suggest some possible solutions. Originating out of a conference of activists and scholars held in Bangkok in 1999, the contributions examine economic issues from a "people-centered" rather than "profit-centered" point of view. Some of their proposals include the reform of international financial institutions, national capital controls, financial transactions taxes and international bankruptcy procedures. Annotation c.
