Edward Tenner contends that with every great advance in science and technology, there is a corresponding revenge effect: transportation which hinders mobility, exercise which diminishes fitness, pest control that spread pests and communication that limits information. This book explains why so many people are dissatisfied and apprehensive despite the undeniable improvements which technology has brought them. The irony lies in the very success of technology which has tended to replace the acute problems that it helps to solve with chronic ones which cannot be eradicated, but only managed: yesterday’s asbestos curtain which represented protection from acute hazard now implies long-term, chronic hazard. WHY THINGS BITE BACK is carefully and extensively documented: it brings together common themes from widely differing disciplines: traffic engineering, epidemiology, ecology, social pyschology and organisational behaviour. It draws on scientific articles as well as business, computer and sports magazines. The resulting overview offers a template for problem solving across the board – be it in business management , household matters, or indeed how to cope with the general stress of living in the technological world.

Edward Tenner was executive editor for science at Princeton University Press. He has taught at Princeton and conducted research at the Institute for Advanced Studies. He is the author of Tech-Speak, a send-up of techno-babble.

Science journalist Edward Ten ner looks more closely at this eternal verity, named after a U.S. Air Force capt ain who, during a test of rocket-sled deceleration, noticed that critical gauges had been improperly set and concluded, If there's more than one way to do a job and one of those ways will end in disaster, then somebody will do it that way. Tenner concurs, and he gives us myriad case studies of how technological fixes o ften create bigger problems than the ones they were meant to solve in the first place. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics, by way of example, has yielded har dier strains of bacteria and viruses that do not respond to pharmaceutical treat ment; the wide-scale use of air conditioning in cities has raised the outdoor te mperature in some places by as much as 10 degrees, adding stress to already-taxe d cooling systems; the modern reliance on medical intervention to deal with simp le illnesses, to say nothing of the rapidly growing number of elective surgeries , means that even a low percentage of error (one patient in twenty-five, by a re cent estimate) can affect increasingly large numbers of people. Tenner examines what he deems the unintended consequences of technological innovation, drawing e xamples from everyday objects and situations.
