Questa raccolta di otto racconti francesi raccolti da charles perrault nell'ultimo decennio del diciassettesimo secolo, contiene forse le più famose fiabe di tutti i tempi: "cenerentola", "la bella addormentata", "il gatto con gli stivali", "barba blu" e naturalmente l'omonima "cappuccetto rosso". Divenne rapidamente la versione standard delle storie su questi temi, fu tradotta in innumerevoli lingue e poi rientrò nella tradizione orale della maggior parte dei paesi europei, in particolare dell'inghilterra.
