Pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1842, la versione poetica di Robert Browning della leggenda sui bambini perduti di Hamelin è sottotitolata ''A Child's Story'' e originariamente era destinata solo al godimento privato di Willie Macready, giovane figlio del famoso attore. Una volta stampata, è diventata una delle preferite di generazioni di bambini (e compilatori di antologie di poesie per bambini. ) Le illustrazioni di Kate Greenaway, incise dal suo stampatore abituale Edmund Evans, sono state pubblicate per la prima volta nel 1888 e sono diventate popolari quanto la poesia stessa, essendo considerate da John Ruskin la sua opera migliore.
