This work explores the nexus between religious belief and mundane behaviour in mid-18th-century Java, exploding the widely accepted stereotypes about the role of Islam in Javanese civilization as he does so. Pakubawana was a malleable 16 year-old who came to the throne under the religious influence of his pious and mystical grandmother Ratu Pakubuwana. He was shaped into the model mystic monarch, who eventually went to Holy War against the Dutch East India company. Specialist though the topic may be, the author's approach is broad, covering social, political and economic history during the reign of King Pakubawana II, the last ruler of the Katsura Kingdom. It provides an insight into how the Javanese thought, prayed and performed at this time, when pre-colonial Java court culutre was at its height.
