In this micro-study of the remote Transkeian village of Caguba, from the perspective of a fieldworker living and participating in the community, Heinz Kuckertz challenges many of the prevailing currents of anthropological thought. This book is one of the few community studies, based on detailed fieldwork, to come out of the region since the Golden Age of South African ethnography, distinguished by the classics of Junod, Hunter, the Kriges and Kuper. Heinz Kuckertz came to South Africa in 1967 after completing studies in theology and philosophy at a seminary run by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit - a missionary congregation of the Catholic Church. His study of social anthropology and general linguistics at the University of the Witwatersrand led to a doctorate in anthropology. At present Father Kuckertz is Principal Superior of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in Southern Africa.
