The Inspiration for this book is to be found on an exquisite slab of Welsh slate above the presbytery steps and in front of the high altar of the abbey church of St Albans. It commemorates the abbots of St Albans, the very men who had presided over the most glorious period of book production at St Albans and who were vitally concerned with letter forms and the durability of the written word. This book explains how the abbots came to be reinterred under the slate and how the slate was designed and cut by David Kindersley and Lida Lopes Cardozo. This book celebrates the abbots' achievement, the slate, and the tradition they both embody.
