Turn Aside from Evil and Do Good was written by a somewhat unconventional hasidic master Zevi Hirsch Eichenstein (1763-1831), with the intention of providing a guide to how to live a saintly life. His views differ from those of other hasidic masters principally in the importance he attributes to studying the kabbalah, which he considers the sole antidote to unbelief, and his positive attitude to sex and to money. From all accounts he himself led a comparatively frugal life, but he still advocated that his followers should have due regard for material prosperity gained by honest means and should certainly devote time to business activity. This lively translation by the distinguished scholar Louis Jacobs gives the reader access to the thoughts and modes of expression of an unusual hasidic master and to the basic ideas of Lurianic kabbalah as he perceived them. Through hundreds of scholarly annotations, printed at the foot of each page for ease of reference, Louis Jacobs helps the reader to understand the kabbalistic ideas and imagery and clarifies the sources to which the author alludes.
Turn Aside from Evil and Do Good conveys the full flavour of original hasidic-kabbalistic thinking. It will be of interest to anyone interested in hasidism and Jewish mysticism or the religious way of life more generally, as well as to social historians. Louis Jacobs has added a very accessible Introduction that provides a succinct explanation of the Lurianic system of kabbalah. He also provides biographic details of Eichenstein and his school, and a full bibliography.

paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. Codice articolo mon0000042177

paperback. Condizione: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill.
