De prestigieuze Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Parijs organiseert dit voorjaar een schitterende retrospectieve van het oeuvre van René Magritte. ’s Werelds meester van het surrealisme wordt voor het voetlicht gebracht met een ruime keuze uit zijn oeuvre: musea en verzamelaars over de hele wereld lenen meer dan 150 schilderijen, tekeningen, sculpturen en objecten uit voor deze tentoonstelling.
Magritte’s leven en voorkomen had alles van een modale burger, maar niets is wat het lijkt: hij was eigenlijk de personificatie van zijn eigen oeuvre. In zijn werken toont hij wat het oog niet kan zien, creëert hij een andere wereld, bedenkt hij enigma’s, stelt hij vragen die niet gesteld worden. Magritte schildert de illusie. Elk object dat hij weergeeft is herkenbaar, benoembaar, getrouw en volgens de klassieke regels geschilderd. Het is echter de associatie van de objecten die zo verrassend is, storend haast, maar toch weer herkenbaar omdat het lijkt alsof ze geschilderd werden vanuit ons eigen onderbewustzijn. Zo ontstaat er een heel aparte poëzie die heel het oeuvre van Magritte kenmerkt en die als het ware haar tegenhanger vindt in de buitensporig inventieve titels die hij zijn werken meegaf.
Ludion publiceert de catalogus bij deze niet te missen tentoonstelling en bracht in samenwerking met de Jeu de Paume de meest vooraanstaande auteurs bij elkaar die het leven en werk van de Belgische surrealist onder de loep nemen en de relaties analyseren die Magritte had met zijn tijdgenoten André Breton, Louis Scutenaire, Edward James en Alexandre Lolas.
