Sinossi

What are your rights as a parent? And what are those of your children? What standards can you expect from schools, hospitals and other services that provide for you and your family? Bringing up children is hard enough, without the extra burden of knowing all the rules and regulations that have an impact upon parenting. This is a book that will help all parents understand their rights and responsibilities, from expecting a first child to becoming a grandparent. Author Jon Robins is an award-winning journalist who writes about legal and consumer issues for the national press. In this book, he draws on the advice of leading experts and organisations on a wide range of topical issues. A Parent s Guide to the Law is in Q&A format, full of practical help, free of jargon and legalese, and with useful contacts at the end of each chapter. The book includes more than 200 answers to parents most frequently asked legal questions, including: Do you have the right to insist upon a home birth? How much time can you take off work to have your baby? How can you appeal a decision to refuse your child their first choice school? At what age is it OK to leave your child home alone ? Is downloading music always illegal? Can your child open a bank account? What powers do the police have to give your child a slap on the wrist ? Do mums always get custody after divorce? How does the Child Support Agency work? What rights do grandparents have to see their grandchildren, if there has been a family dispute?
