Each proverb is given a literal translation and an English equivalent. Ilia Terzulli Warner was born in Puglia and married the bookseller Esmond Warner (son of the famous cricketer, Plum Warner) in 1944. She settled in Cambridge after periods in Cairo and Brussels, and produced two daughters who pursued their own writing careers. She died in 2008.
