Sinossi

Major depression affects up to 15 percent of the population. Many people have a genetic predisposition to the disease, which can be triggered by significant life events or prolonged periods of stress. Happily, most people, given the correct treatment, recover well from depression. Depression is still poorly understood by the general public. In Flagging Depression, family doctor and mental-health specialist, Dr. Harry Barry offers advice to those suffering from depression, and their friends and family members, on what depression is, how it can be treated, and how to reduce the risk of subsequent bouts, He outlines a holistic approach to depression, featuring lifestyle and dietary changes, talk therapy, and medication. In straightforward language, he gives practical advice on how people suffering from depression can feel better, get better, and stay well.

'The deep economic and social problems of modern Ireland have left many of us feeling bruised and worthless. For those dealing with the pain of depression, Harry Barry's latest book, Flagging Depression a Practical Guide, offers a simple step-by - step guide for a sure path to recovery.' --Dr Muiris Houston, health columnist with The Irish Times

'If I were to recommend just one book to read on depression, it would be this. Writing with the empathy, intelligence and non-judgemental insight that we now expect from him, Dr Barry shows that he has not only listened very carefully to those who suffer from depression and understood their distress, but has spent much effort compiling a practical guide devoted to coping with, and recovering, from this distressing condition. Flagging Depression, with its compassionate accessibility, holistic methodology and razor-sharp insights, should be mandatory reading for the Department of Health, the HSE, GPs, secondary schools, and all those who have any interest in maintaining good mental health. In essence, all of us. I really can't recommend it highly enough.' --Carole Miriam Hunt, Sunday Independent

'Depression is one of the most significant public health problems in Ireland. Flagging Depression is a truly amazing book for those with an interest in the topic of Depression. The book is written in an accessible style which comprehensively addresses the topic and it is obvious that the author is both well informed and has a deep empathy with those who experience depression, either those who are diagnosed with the condition or those who have family members or loved ones who experience the unique phenomenon of depression. The book, in essence represents a comprehensive and simultaneously empathetic journey into depression. This is not just a book about depression or one which enhances knowledge about the topic; it is a practical guide to understanding and managing this complex area of mental distress. It is skilfully written in a caring, meaningful and supportive style, which reveals the significant professional background of the author in this field.
