My son, James Reed, died on the 4th of June 2023 aged 34. By the purity of his soul, his natural spirituality and his total lack of egoism, James stood apart from the majority of his peers. Fine and rare as these qualities are, they were troubling to his mother, Dominique and his father John. They both knew that his chosen path through life would be exceedingly hard for him. It proved to be fatal. James did not take his own life but his will to live had been exhausted.
There is a simple explanation for why James became interested in spirituality. John Reeds early study of spiritual teachings changed his views on the meaning and purpose of life. James's mother shared John's deep interest in powerful mystical experiences and together they put James on same track. James path was, however, deeper and more difficult than that of his parents as he was without ego He was 'neither in the world nor of it' which is an impossible existential condition, because, short of becoming a monk, there is no viable way to opt out of the world as it is and survive (particularly in the west).
The only choice, he felt, was to 'drop out' of what he considered a despiritualized and meaningless way of living. In the first instance, he escaped to the monasteries of Mount Athos, Greece where he lived with the monks for several months and was given the option to remain. Instead, he chose the life of a nomad wanderer surviving for four years (without contact with his family and with minimal resources) on the streets of America. His long absences were torment to his parents and his early death unbearable. His father, John, is convinced James found peace in a dimension of pure spirit where he belongs and has always belonged. He takes comfort from this belief to a greater extent than Dominique who, as a mother, understandably feels the loss in a more persistent and immediate sense.
A good friend of James described James described him as a 'Soul of Divine Light'. "e;There are so many words I can use to describe James. He was a free soul with nothing but kindness in heart. To know him was to understand the joy he brought to others just in the way he presented himself with his fine demeanor and gentle ways. A simple comment would always make you smile. Witty, intelligent and so personable. His character commanded the way you would treat someone with open arms and curiosity. His adventures took him around the world on a never-ending pursuit of enlightenment. A true saint and scholar. Now we must realize that his life should not be forgotten nor be dismissed without recognition of the blessings that he so unselfishly offered."e;
