This is what Rory MaGrath experienced for nearly twenty-six years of his life, and his obsessive pursuit for genuine intimacy with his creator took him on a long and painful journey. He believes that anyone can move into the heart-felt relationship with God that we may have heard others speak about.

Rory was born in South Africa, and has a certificate in Bible Theology through SATS (South African Theological Seminary).

He is married to Pauline and they reside in Leeds, England, where he is actively involved in their local church.

Rory’s first book, Breakthrough into Recovery, was published in the UK in July 2018.

"Here we go again with this religious stuff!” I thought. I wanted to turf the whole thing. I had done the whole “God and church” thing and had failed miserably at experiencing anything real with Him. The God I thought I knew was not going to help me with this drinking problem. But I believe that the first paragraph or so saved my life. It said that the Program was not a religious one but rather a deeply spiritual one. It said that we should keep our minds open to the fact that there might be a being greater than ourselves who could possibly be able to help. Reading this made me just curious enough to read on. I praise God that I pressed on with reading the book. It suggested that instead of listening to other people’s perceptions of who God is, why didn’t I choose my own perception of Him? They hinted at the idea of thinking of God as one’s own, not as other people’s God. I decided my God would be loving, forgiving, understanding, patient, graceful, supportive, able and real to me. When I look at a portrait of Jesus these days, He is all those things and more! The only thing I had to do was give Him the problem with complete abandon. I am now very grateful to God for the gift of desperation. I was so desperate that I was willing to try anything! I know that I would not have gone through with the Program so wholeheartedly if I were not frantically desperate. I knew I was beaten and could not stop, so I let go and, amazingly, I did stop.
