Oneiromancy is the study of dreams to predict the patterns of the future. First published in Chile in 1943, Winétt de Rokha's Oneiromancy uses dreams, myths, folk-tales, 'rivers, books and disillusions' to challenge the apparent triumph of reaction in Europe. Writing on behalf of the mothers of the world facing the 'hurricane of fascism', de Rokha combines documentary realism, social protest and the lyrical unconscious to explore the layered meanings of history and landscape, love and politics, utopian dream and dystopian reality. The book was also a reply to her husband's Morfología del espanto, published the same year. An extraordinary Latin American mix of communism and surrealism; Frida Kahlo meets Tina Modotti.
