Sinossi
Originally published in 1933, an Austral classic!
“As In Darlinghurst Nights, it is possible to see in these poems the darker side of the Depression… where the verse shines is in the enjoyment of living… It is a world of externals: clothing motor cars, yachts, aeroplanes, the tatty and the fashionable, not the world of metaphysics and unobtainable beauty… Romance in 1930 was a way out of the spiritual depressions of the Slump, a cheap escape from the cruel fiscal realities preached by Sir Otto Niemeyer, and a way of enjoying the senses free from the control of the state or the economy.”
- Julian Croft, from his introduction

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Variously called Australia's first modern poet, the father of modern Australian poetry, and "the master craftsman of them all," Kenneth Slessor continues to be admired in Australia and abroad for a comparatively small body of work. Yet one of his critics, Herbert C. Jaffa, has said that "some of [Slessor's] poems are among the most important written in English in modern literature." Backless Betty from Bondi was first published in 1930 as a poem to the flappers (modern gals) who moved to Sydneys Eastern Suburbs. Introduced by Julian Croft this is its first publication in paperback. Originally published in 1933, an Austral classic!
