The CD showcases two compositions by Antonķn Dvoržįk, a major nineteenth-century Czech composer best known for both his large-scale symphonic works and his intimate chamber music, especially his contributions to the repertoire for string quartet. The Opus 34 quartet was written as a tribute to the principal agent of his success, Johannes Brahms. Dvoržįk wrote the Opus 51 in response to a commission for a string quartet of pronounced Slavic character, and it reflects the expectations of the larger audience he sought to accommodate. The music is performed by the Pro Arte String Quartet.

The Pro Arte Quartet was founded in Brussels in 1912 by violinist Alphonse Onnou and violist Germain Prévost and has had a long career as one of the most enduring string quartets in existence. In 1940, due to Nazi invasion of Belgium, the quartet was invited to a permanent residency at the University of Wisconsin Madison, the first such artist residency granted by a major American university. This recording of Opus 34 and Opus 51 is the debut release of the current Pro Arte Quartet, together since 1995.
