Through successive editions, Elements became increasingly geared to the needs and uses of the classroom and so, this seventh edition is still valuable to contemporary students. Whately saw this work as a textbook, and thus focused on the practical rather than the theoretical, writing with the problems of the teacher and learner in mind. Direct, comprehensive, clearly organized and well illustrated, the Elements has admirably served to fulfill its assigned role for students whom Whately called the 'unpracticed.' But does a 19th century text still have a role in 21st century argumentation? As one contemporary student noted: "His more objective analysis of how rhetoric works and the opinions of various iconic individuals regarding it was like a breath of fresh air. I felt I was finally being shown the tools for how to use rhetoric rather [than] being subjected to abstract arguments concerning it."

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 7th Edition Revised. [Preface to Idebate Press reissue: xii]; 479pp., xlv. Facsimile Reprint of Seventh Edition, Revised, published in London by John W. Parker, West Strand, 1846. Preface by Karyn Charles Rybecki; Introduction by Douglas Ehninger. Shiny black wraps with turquoise megaphone at left middle front cover, with title and author name lettering in white, as if being emitted from the "megaphone" on the upward slant toward top right front cover. Several minor defects appear to be due somehow to the book manufacturing process: mottled fore-edge, as if sprayed with tiny droplets (but NO warping except minor, small amount on short lengths of edges of front and rear flyleafs); small bump to bottom right cornerof spine (NO damage to integrity of spine); 3 pages (329/330, 331/332, 333/334) were torn together on a slight diagonal, up from lower edge for 1 3/4": now flat and separated, with NO loss to printed text; 2 other pages (225/226, 227/228) have two small nicks to them (NOT large tears); lower edge rear cover has three sites of jams, with resultant slight folds to it (NOT full creases: NO impact on the text block itself); a small nick to rear cover left edge at midpoint: it all describes much worse than it is: Tight binding (NO creases); sharp corners, no rubbing wear, no previous owner names. Clean text. Despite minor flaws to artifact, looks, nonetheless, newish and Unread. Codice articolo 001472
