Raju, a poor boy in a small town in India, starts his formative years at the time of Independence. Ambitious and full of determination, he beats all odds and achieves his goals by dint of sheer hard work. He often stumbles and bruises his knees, but brushes off his injuries and continues his march ahead. He takes his whole family along the path of prosperity and achieves many goals without compromising any of the principles he holds dear. He also plays a role in the story of India, which also starts as an impoverished nation, but despite many divisive forces and four wars in a short period, progresses by achieving a white revolution, a green revolution, nuclear capability, telecom advancement, a space programme, an IT revolution, nuclear power status, and finally gets on the fast track of growth to be the second fastest growing economy in the world. Today it is knocking at the doors of the UN Security Council to claim its rightful place in the comity of nations. The novel has a few fascinating love stories intertwined, and also shows the growth and empowerment of women after Independence. The author, who lived through the period, narrates both the stories with a rare passion to make the novel a compelling read.
