One of the most pressing questions of our age is whether there is a “permanent hell” and what are the conditions that cause a human spirit to devolve into this “second lake of fire” that is described in St. John’s Book of Revelation. Anthroposophists have continually debated this question and use Rudolf Steiner’s ideas about the “Eighth Sphere” to justify their opinions. These personal opinions are frequently limited in their scope because the bigger question of the Seven Spheres of Creation (the Divine Plan) and the nature of the Eighth Sphere are not understood in their full context. Dr. Steiner is not easy to understand, and new student of Anthroposophy often fall short of a comprehensive understanding of the full cycle of creation – the Golden Chain of Seven Spheres. Clear distinctions between the past “donations” of the higher spiritual hierarchies relative to the “fallen” laggard behavior of beings of all ranks of the hierarchy during the Earth incarnation are blurred by the lack of wisdom needed to refine the larger picture of evolution versus devolution and the question of evil. Many times, new students of Spiritual Science try to explain what they know little about; and thus, much confusion has arisen concerning these delicate matters which underpin the entire intention of creation and its ultimate outcome. We have written many times about the issue of the Eighth Sphere and have gathered some of those ideas together in this booklet so that clarity might be arrived at in the minds and hearts of sincere students of Spiritual Science.
