We often assume that through prayer we are tugging God’s sleeve, so to say, to get His attention and make Him look down on us and pay heed to our request. It is actually the other way round – it is God trying to get our attention!Even in prayer we are like children, one moment attracted to God and conversing with Him, then next flitting away to our various duties or other ‘important’ aspects of life. We quieten ourselves to listen to Him, but then are distracted by the various ‘more’ attractive choices available to us. From morning to night, we flit like butterflies from event to event, duty to duty, responsibility to responsibility and before we know it, we are at the end of the day and there is just enough time to say a 2 sec/min prayer viz. Lord thank you for this day, bless us, keep us safe and help us get up early etc. Next morning we arise, spend another 5 min prayer for the day and then plunge into our day with the excuse, ‘God understands’. Sure, God does understand, but do we?Soren Kierkegaard rightly said, “Prayer does not change God, but it changes him who prays”. Or to rephrase it, paying attention to God does not change God, but it changes him who pays attention to God!Therefore, let us now ask God, like the disciples of old, to teach us to pray. Let us learn to pray. Let us learn to pay attention to Him.-------Edited by Prem Kumar S.
