With the Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) officially released, it has been well received and has become the industry standard for developing AAA titles according to the announcement made by many game studios including CD Projekt Red and Crystal Dynamics.
Since UE5 first launched in Early Access unveiled in 2020, I decided to port our award-winning ARPG, Chaos Era Online (COA online), developed using the Torque Game Engine and C++, to UE5. This is because my co-workers at the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (STUST) always asked whether I could port the game over using the Unreal Engine, which was already powerful and popular in the past. After about one year of porting it over to UE5, the progress was smooth and I decided to write a new book series to share the experience of using Unreal C++ and Blueprint to develop an online Action RPG.
This book is the second volume of the series and will cover Character Customization (Paper Dolls), Inventory System, AI, Dialogues and Quests, Shops, Minimap and World Map, and Packaging. In the series, we aim to not only explore how a commercial ARPG can be made using UE5 in C++ and Blueprint but also discuss the theory behind the RPG design. The reason why it can be presented in this way is based on my work over a decade as both a professional game developer and a lecturer of multimedia and game development at several universities in Taiwan, including the Department of Multimedia and Entertainment Science department at the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology and the Department of Digital Media Design at the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. Over the years, our team has accumulated experience and achievements in making online games and obtained good results in related online game design competitions.
With the accompanying exercises in each chapter, this book is also suitable as a textbook for a one-semester course in game programming for Juniors or Seniors in a four-year college. The teaching materials will be available soon by request after this book is published.
