"And Thereby Hangs a Tale" considera il ruolo della parodia e della satira nell'umorismo. L'arguzia può variare dall'assurdità e dalle sciocchezze di Catch-22 all'umorismo oscuro (senza scherzo) trovato in Slaughterhouse-5 . Jonathan Swift combina l'avventura con satira selvaggia , beffardo costumi inglesi e la politica del giorno nel suo lavoro diciotto secolo Viaggi di Gulliver .
Le questioni finanziarie sono oggetto di "Né un mutuatario né un prestatore essere". Un po"di astuzia è tutto ciò che serve per un uomo per sposare suo figlio con la figlia di Bill Gates.
