Sinossi
Georges Bataille (1897-1962) est une figure singulière dans la philosophie et l’anthropologie contemporaines. Son itinéraire - profondément désordonné et tout à la fois spirituel, politique et littéraire - répond, par-delà les limites du convenu, à la volonté de révéler une vue souveraine, dégagée des servitudes qu’impose la vie. L’expérience intérieure en fournit une belle illustration, qui s'interroge sur la souffrance s’avouant du désintoxiqué, une fois que l’homme se convainc de ses deux seules certitudes : qu’il n’est pas tout et qu’il est mortel. Alors l’esprit se meut dans un monde étrange où l’angoisse et l’extase se composent. Bataille en décrit ainsi le mouvement : «C'est jouer l'homme ivre, titubant, qui, de fil en aiguille, prend sa bougie pour lui-même, la souffle, et criant de peur, à la fin, se prend pour la nuit».

Georges Bataille est né à Billom (Puy-de-Dôme) en 1897, mort à Paris en 1962. Les faits marquants de sa vie (adhésion au catholicisme, puis perte de la foi, expérience de la psychanalyse, engagement au Cercle communiste démocratique, lutte contre le fascisme, fondation d'un Collège de Sociologie et, plus tard, de la revue Critique) se retrouvent dans une oeuvre inclassable, très variée, constituée d'essais, de récits et de poèmes.
