Informazioni sull'autore
Philip Roth est né le 19 mars 1933 à Newark, dans le New Jersey. Second enfant d'Américains de deuxième génération, Bess et Herman Roth, Philip Roth grandit au sein de la communauté juive de Weequahic, quartier qui sera le décor de nombre de ses livres. Diplômé du lycée de Weequahic en 1950, il étudia ensuite à l'Université Bucknell, en Pennsylvanie, et à l'Université de Chicago, où il reçut une bourse pour terminer son master de littérature anglaise. En 1959, Roth publia Goodbye, Columbus - un recueil de nouvelles et une novella - pour lequel il reçut le National Book Award. Dix ans plus tard, la publication de son quatrième roman, Portnoy et son complexe, valut à Roth un succès aussi bien critique que commercial, qui assit sa réputation de jeune écrivain parmi les plus talentueux d'Amérique. Roth était l'auteur de trente et un livres, notamment ceux suivant les tribulations de Nathan Zuckerman, et d'un narrateur fictif nommé Philip Roth par le prisme duquel il explora et mit en lumière les complexités de l'expérience américaine aux XXe et XXIe siècles. L'importante contribution de Roth à la littérature a été largement reconnue de son vivant, tant aux États-Unis que dans le reste du monde. Il a reçu, entre autres distinctions, le prix Pulitzer et l'International Man Booker Prize, a gagné deux fois le National Book Critics Circle Award et le National Book Award, et a été décoré de la Médaille nationale des Arts et de la Médaille nationale des Humanités par les présidents Clinton et Obama, respectivement. Philip Roth est mort le 22 mai 2018 à l'âge de quatre-vingt-cinq ans, six ans après avoir cessé d'écrire.
