La linguistique est aujourd'hui une discipline qui produit des modèles sophistiqués pour ce qui constitue son champ par excellence : l'écrit standard, ou une langue plus ou moins neutralisée. Mais la langue quotidienne, telle qu'elle est parlée par des locuteurs réels, qui diffère radicalement de cette langue homogénéisée, n'est que peu prise en considération, car généralement considérée comme fautive, incomplète, pâle reflet de la langue écrite. Le Français ordinaire veut tout d'abord, au carrefour de problématiques socio-linguistique et grammaticale, décrire le français de tous les jours, compte tenu de la variation de locuteur à locuteur ; il veut ensuite s'interroger sur la difficulté d'adapter les outils, aussi bien socio-linguistiques que grammaticaux à un tel objet. Il aborde ensuite, sous les angles phonologique et syntaxique, les tendances caractérisant le français contemporain, par l'examen de problèmes précis, abordés à travers de petits corpus et des situations concrètes. Cette analyse constitue une description détaillée du " français ordinaire ", illustrée de nombreux exemples, mais ne néglige pas les questions de théorie linguistique générale. Françoise Gadet est à l'écoute du " français tel qu'on le parle ", mais aussi des nombreux commentaires et polémiques qu'il a suscités. Cette seconde édition, entièrement revue et augmentée, s'enrichit d'une bibliographie supplémentaire de plus de 120 titres, pour la plupart des travaux récents attestant que ce domaine, si négligé dans l'histoire de la linguistique française, constitue enfin un domaine d'étude à part entière.

Françoise Gadet est professeur de Sciences du langage à l'université de Paris-Nanterre. Elle a publié La Langue introuvable (en collaboration avec Michel Pêcheux, Maspéro, 1981), La Grammaire d'aujourd'hui (en collaboration avec Michel Arrivé et Michel Galmiche, Flammarion, 1985), Saussure, une science de la langue (PUF, 1987), et Le Français populaire (PUF, 1992).
