First complete French translation of Kepler's Mysterium Cosmographicum, originally published at Tübingen in 1596 and substantially revised for a second edition issued at Frankfurt in 1621. Kepler's earliest major work, written when he was only twenty-five years old, presents his celebrated attempt to demonstrate the structure of the planetary system by means of the five regular Platonic solids, whose arrangement between the six known planetary spheres was held to reveal the geometrical plan underlying the Copernican universe. At the same time, the work constitutes one of the earliest and most ambitious physical and philosophical defences of Copernican astronomy. The translation is based upon both the 1596 and 1621 editions, incorporating the extensive annotations and revisions added by Kepler to the later version. The volume is supplemented by four appendices containing lesser-known texts relevant to the reception of Copernicanism in the seventeenth century, including an extract from the preface to the Astronomia Nova, a draft preface by Michael Maestlin for an edition of Copernicus, and an extract from Riccioli's Almagestum Novum. The substantial introductory matter examines Kepler's life up to 1596, the genesis and structure of the Mysterium Cosmographicum, its contemporary reception, the significance of the revised 1621 edition, and the editorial principles underlying the present translation. The text is followed by the French translation of the Mysterium Cosmographicum in twenty-three chapters, four appendices, plate descriptions, translator's notes, bibliography and abbreviations, and indexes of ancient and modern authors. An important scholarly edition of one of the foundational texts of the Scientific Revolution and an indispensable resource for the study of Kepler's cosmology and early Copernicanism.
