Bien que ses contes fassent partie de la littérature universelle, Andersen est largement méconnu. La douzaine de " Contes et histoires " que le grand public sait généralement énumérer ne représente qu'une infime partie d'un corpus qui en compte quelque cent cinquante-six. Le lecteur attentif a tôt fait de constater qu'Andersen n'est pas le naïf écrivain pour enfants pour lequel on le prend habituellement. Plusieurs de ses récits oubliés ou ignorés permettent de pénétrer directement dans son univers conceptuel. On s'aperçoit alors que sa pensée avait des profondeurs insoupçonnées. L'ombre et La cloche, deux contes publiés à quelques années d'intervalle seulement, montrent ainsi que s'il était, certes, héritier du romantisme, il était en même temps sensible à certaines interrogations résolument modernes.
