Boissard (1528-1602) had an impressive poetic and emblematic publication record, and was responsible for the text and images for two major emblem books and contributed to many others. In this, the Emblematum liber. Emblemes latins he remarks on tenets of his Calvinist faith, including the Christian life, death, humanist emblems, pragmatism, friendship v. hypocrisy, the ruler, voluptas and ingratitude. Adams makes the copy from the Glasgow University Library much more accessible, noting textual variants, the individual dedicatee, descriptions and transcriptions of inscriptions and emblems, and fairly literal translations of Boissard's quatrain along with high-quality facsimiles. Adams includes notes on the accompanying sonnet by Joly and comparative notes on the Greek sententia in Boissard's own hand on the copy maintained by the Royal Library in Brussels.
