Aujourd'hui universellement célèbre pour ses paysages, Camille Corot (1796-1875) fut aussi un immense peintre de figures ; Degas l'estimait d'ailleurs tout particulièrement en ce domaine, soulignant sa modernité. Portraits d'intimes et nus étranges, paysannes romaines et moines absorbés dans la lecture, enfants et modèles d'ateliers, femmes à la mode et hommes en armures, Corot aborda tous les genres avec succès, des toutes petites effigies de ses intimes à ses monumentales figures de fantaisie, dont la Femme à la perle au musée du Louvre est la plus célèbre. Contemporain aussi bien d'Ingres auquel il rend hommage que de Courbet ou du jeune Manet, auquel il se confronte, Corot, au cours de sa longue carrière, cherche, avec ses figures, à élever un pont entre tradition et modernité. Riche d'une soixantaine de chefs-d'oeuvre provenant des plus importantes collections publiques et privées d'Europe et des Etats-Unis (musée du Louvre, musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Genève, de Zurich, Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York, National Gallery de Washington, collection Thyssen-Bornemisza de Madrid...), cet ouvrage rend compte de l'exposition organisée par le musee Marmottan Monet, Corot, peindre la figure humaine, du 8 février au 8 juillet 2018. Il met en lumière cet aspect aussi original que brillant de la production de celui qui fut le premier paysagiste moderne.
