Il y a bien des manières de donner à voir "les Années Noires" . Celle de Robert Doisneau évite le pathos, parle simplement du grand vide de l'Occupation, de la vie quotidienne : rues sans automobiles, pénuries généralisées, étalages déserts remplis seulement du maître-mot de Vichy : "Factice" . Sensible au cocasse jusque dans les situations les plus pénibles, l'oeil de Doisneau repère les astuces et les incongruités du système D : un homme transforme son poêle en clapier, une parisienne fait prendre l'air à sa poule dans un jardin public. S'il décrit l'héroïsme, Doisneau montre des typographes résistants ; l'amie de Vercors, Yvonne Paraf, dite Desvignes, brochant le premier exemplaire du Silence de la mer dans sa cuisine ; les multiples combattants anonymes de la Libération. Pour la plupart inédites, ces photographies en disent long sur ce moment dramatique de l'histoire.

Durant plus de soixante ans, Robert Doisneau (I9I2-I994) a créé une incomparable documentation sur la vie des Parisiens et des banlieusards, des Halles au Gentilly d'avant-guerre, le grand vide de l'Occupation en 40-44, sa banlieue sud natale, du Saint-Germain des Prés existentialiste aux villes nouvelles des années quatre-vingt... Ses milliers d'images dépassent largement leur valeur documentaire, obéissant à une perspective d'ensemble, elles forment une oeuvre exprimant une vision unique. Aucune catégorie n'est parvenue à définir la richesse et la diversité de son travail. Doisneau est avant tout le témoin engagé d'une histoire en mouvement, hanté par une réflexion profonde sur le temps qui passe, le superflu, l'inachevé, la modernité au sens baudelairien du terme... . C'est la raison pour laquelle il a su si bien capter ce qui allait irrémédiablement disparaître.
