The American artist John Chamberlain, born in 1929, was influenced by Van Gogh and later by abstract Expressionism and the work of the sculptor David Smith. He went on to creat abstract sculptures from car bodywork and scrap metal which he assembles, crushes, welds, paints, etc. in response to the Musée d'Orsay's invitation, Chamberlain has chosen the lush vegetation of Van Gogh's In Dr Gachet's garden, confronting it with Lipstick Canteen, which deploys its leaves of coloured metal in space.
