"L'effacement des femmes de l'histoire de l'art n'est pas l'héritage de préjugés séculaires ; c'est le produit de la manière dont l'histoire de l'art moderniste et le musée moderne du XXe siècle ont construit un récit au sujet de leurs propres contemporain-e-s." Publié en 1981, Maîtresses d'autrefois, ouvrage fondateur de Rozsika Parker et Griselda Pollock, ne propose pas une histoire de l'art au féminin. Son projet est bien plus radical, émancipateur et, de fait, toujours pertinent aujourd'hui. Il s'intéresse tout autant à ce que l'histoire de l'art, en tant que discipline et idéologie, a fait et fait encore aux artistes femmes et à leurs oeuvres qu'a ce que leurs pratiques font ou pourraient faire à l'histoire de l'art, si elles étaient pleinement étudiées et considérées. Les cinq parties du livre associent études de cas approfondies - de Sofonisba Anguissola et Berthe Morisot à Meret Oppenheim et Mary Kelly-, analyses des structures de la production artistique, tels l'opposition idéologique entre art et artisanat ou les stéréotypes assignés à "l'essence féminine", et développements vigoureux sur la manière orientée dont la discipline "histoire de l'art" s'est forgée, socialement et symboliquement. Les autrices offrent ainsi une recherche salutaire à toutes celles et tous ceux qui, avec elles, ne veulent pas seulement ajouter des noms féminins à l'histoire de l'art mais en modifier en profondeur l'écriture. Traduit pour la première fois en français, l'ouvrage est introduit par l'historienne de l'art Giovanna Zapperi et bénéficie d'une préface récente de Griselda Pollock, ancrant résolument Maîtresses d'autrefois dans le présent. Coéditée avec la Fondation Antoine de Galbert, la collection "Lectures maison rouge" publie des textes qui interrogent la muséographie, l'écriture de l'exposition et de l'histoire de l'art. Ouvrage publié avec le soutien des Amis du National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington.

Informazioni sull'autore
Rozsika Parker (1945-2010) est une historienne d'art, écrivaine, psychothérapeute et féministe britannique. Elle est l'autrice de l'ouvrage influent The Subversive Stitch: Embroidery and the Making of the Feminine (1984).
Griselda Pollock (née en 1949 en Afrique du Sud), critique d'art et de culture moderne et contemporaine, professeure émérite d'histoire sociale et critique de l'art à l'université de Leeds, est spécialiste de la théorie psychanalytique française, de l'avant-garde et de Van Gogh. Elle est lauréate du prix Holberg 2020 « pour ses contributions révolutionnaires à l'histoire de l'art féministe et aux études culturelles ».
