Jusqu’à une date récente, on ne connaissait que six des treize livres que comprenaient originellement les Arithmétiques de Diophante d’Alexandrie. Quatre livres supplémentaires ont été récemment découverts en traduction arabe. Nous sommes donc maintenant en mesure de comprendre le projet de l’auteur, l’organisation de l’ouvrage et son impact sur un millénaire et demi de recherche mathématique. Le présent livre offre la première étude historique et mathématique, à ce jour, de l’ensemble des dix livres.
