Über Lenz sagte Goethe in "Dichtung und Wahrheit", er sei "wie ein Meteor" über die deutsche Literatur hingezogen und verschwunden, "ohne im Leben eine Spur zurückzulassen". So ganz hat das nie gestimmt - aber Lenz steht eigentümlich quer und wie von Natur aus oppositionell in der Literaturgeschichte. Georg-Michael Schulz stellt den Autor vor und untersucht das Gesamtwerk mit seiner Verbindung von Groteske und fast religiösem Ernst, seinem Sinn für Fehlschläge, Versagen und Scheitern.
